MythOS

"What we really need is a place to belong." ― MythOS slogan

The Myth Operating System (referred to as MythOS) is an in-development three-dimensional operating system built on the BONEWORKS framework. Utilising energy from a dimension called the Voidway, MythOS is able to simulate infinite instances of virtual space for individuals to live, work and play, accessed through various headsets. It was developed by Monogon Industries, and is maintained almost entirely by an artificial intelligence, known as the Voidmind AI

Design

MythOS works by creating infinite instances of a virtual space - this space being MythOS City. Different instances of this city can be created and destroyed as needed in order to create enough space. The method through which this is done is void energy - a powerful, extradimensional particle that exists in multiple places at once. Through void energy, a singular area (such as a museum, plaza or warehouse) can be replicated infinite times. However, these instances are created off of templates, which can then be modified independently. For example, an instance that is vandalized will not cause all other instances to also become vandalized. In this way, each instance can be changed or personalized.

MythOS itself does not interface with the Voidway[1], but uses the BONEWORKS interface to do so.

Almost everything found in one instance cannot be transported to another - this includes items and other static geometry. However, more complex entities such as users or math packages can. Transport between instances is done through an Instance Warp - a large, glowing blue portal.

History

OldMyth

The predecessor to MythOS was OldMyth (at the time known simply as Myth), a more standard operating system released in the 1980s by Monogon (then known as Monodisc). OldMyth built 3D spaces more similar to real life, with applications mainly for edutainment. It required cables and a home computer which ran the Myth program.

The resounding popularity of OldMyth caused Monodisc to invest in VR technology and explore other options to expand. In 1990, they discovered the Voidway, a strange dimension full of void energy. After studying and understanding the nature of the particle, Monodisc rebranded as Monogon Industries and began development of MythOS. Monogon had already dedicated a decade of work towards artificial intelligence, and so paired void energy with their research to construct the Voidmind AI, which moderates and controls MythOS. From there, the Voidmind AI began working on generating infinite instances of MythOS.

BONEWORKS (2019)

In Boneworks MythOS was unfinished , planned release was 1997.

BONELAB (2022)

In Bonelab MythOS was finished and released. This explains differences between Bonelab and Boneworks.

Trivia

  • Technically, MythOS is not an operating system - the BONEWORKS framework is, and MythOS is a program built upon it.
